How can I be involved?
Our success in learning more about what promotes healthy development is dependent on families who are willing to help us! We welcome families to participate in one of our ongoing research studies. Will my child like participating?
We create each study with children in mind. We have carefully developed games, questions, and experiences to engage children, while we learn about child development. Appointments are designed to be interesting and enjoyable for your child. Children usually report that they had fun and can't wait to visit us again!
How old are the children in your projects?
We involve children and adults across the lifespan. Be sure to check out our "ongoing studies" page to learn more about current studies.
Will my child be in a safe environment?
Our lab is specifically designed to be a child friendly, safe environment. Our lab is located in a private suite in Green Hall on UT Dallas' main campus in Richardson. We have colorful rooms equipped with various toys and games. We even have a child's restroom that is "just their size"! We always allow and encourage parents to actively participate with their children. We even have an observation window that allows parents to watch their children participate.
What types of activities will my child do?
In order to better understand child development, we interview children individually and ask them to participate in a variety of age-appropriate tasks. Since most of the research tasks are presented as a game, many children find these activities fun and engaging. When arriving in the lab, parents will be informed about the details of the study and the activities their child will be involved in. In addition, we are always happy to answer any questions you may have at any time during the study.
What if my child does not want to finish or we have to leave before the end of the interview?
Parents and children can leave at any time under any circumstances and still receive their incentive.
Will I be compensated for participating?
Each study provides different incentives for participating. In the past, families have received gift cards, cash, or have been entered into a raffle. Children receive small toys. Parents are informed before coming into the lab if they will receive an incentive.
Will I be informed about the study results?
After participating in a study, you will have the option of providing us with your contact information. When the research is completed, we will send you a report of our study findings. We do not provide results for individual children, and individual children are never identified in publications.
Can I bring other children with me even if they will not be participating?
You are welcome to bring your children with you. Children can play with games and toys that we have available in the waiting room. We can arrange for one of the research assistants to care for children who are not participating in research activities with advanced notice. Please let us know in advance if you will need childcare.
